SPM English Tricks

Scoring English 1119 is not that difficult if you know "how to do it". Well, some students might say that it is quiet complicated to understand some parts of English paper. I would say literature is the toughest part - if you do not read the text properly. Reading and Understanding are two different things. Some students might get drown while reading - some will take a shortcut: memorizing everything. Whether it works or not, I suggest you read thru all these suggestions so that you can get clear idea on what I am writing about.

Paper 1: Writing

  • I always highlight few points on 'familiarizing yourself with the questions and understanding the context.
  • Weak students tend to have problem to master sentence structures. They tend to use simple sentence from top to bottom of their writing. Worst case scenario, they will do a direct translation from their mother tongue language! This simply can't help you to score. What I will suggest is - Read the sentence structure notes. Be familiar with types of sentences such as simple, compound and complex sentences. It might be tough at the beginning but later, it will turn out to be easy when you understand and able to differentiate all of them. • Remember how to do paragraphing? Well, paragraphing is very crucial in order to structure your idea properly from head to tail. Good paragraphing strategy will give you more credit by stating the important points above the least important one. Therefore, it creates the interest for the readers to read further without making them puzzle or bored.
  • Introduction of the essay should be POWERFUL and INTERESTING enough in order to grab the attention of the readers. Avoid using cliche' kind of introduction. I once read one of my students essay. He started with "Once upon a time................." while writing a SPEECH! Can you imagine that? You can always start your essay with beautiful quote, lyrics from relevant song, wise saying, short speech text, studies and statistic or  even proverb!
  • Always have the 'small conclusion' at the end of every paragraph. Start it with "Therefore............" to highlight the problem statement of every paragraph.
  • Always stick with the rule: Problem Statement - Definition - Explanation - Example - Explanation - Additional Information - Small Conclusion (I will make another entry of this).

TRICKS for the WEAK:

If you are really weak, you don't know how to write properly or if you are not that weak but you don't really know how to write, then this might help you:

  1. Choose few good essays that covered these issue:
    • Love Story - it can be the story of family or you can get this from any novel
